In a recent auction at Sotheby’s in New York, Ethiopian-born artist Julie Mehretu set a new record for the highest sale price of any work by an African-born artist.
Her abstract painting, “Walkers With the Dawn and Morning,” inspired by a Langston Hughes poem and created in response to Hurricane Katrina, fetched an impressive $10.7 million.
Mehretu, who moved to the US in 1977, has become a leading figure in the contemporary African art scene.
The auction witnessed intense bidding, ultimately culminating in the record-breaking sale.
The sale of Mehretu’s “Walkers With the Dawn and Morning,” setting a new record at $9.3 million, reflects the increasing interest in contemporary African art.
Sotheby’s notes that the artwork encapsulates her distinctive style, blending architectural drawing, vibrant vectors, and calligraphic sweeps.
This surge in appreciation for abstract works signals a maturing market for contemporary African art, as noted by Hannah O’Leary, head of Sotheby’s modern and contemporary African art department.
Additionally, Mehretu’s recent commission to create BMW’s next Art Car further solidifies her impact on the art world.
